Children day care facilities are establishments where they provide paid care for preschool-aged children around 5 years old (infants, toddlers and preschool children). Older children and youths can also enroll in before and after school programs or in other social assistance services during the summer. The demand for these services has increased notably in the last years due to the increase of the parents’ working hours. While most parents can’t let their children with a relative, these facilities are a cheap alternative to enrolling children in after-school activities that have higher fees.

There are two different types of child day care facilities: formal center-based services and family child care providers where children are taken care at a family’s home. This last one is less regulated because of its private nature. Although they both fall under the same industry organization, center-based services are controlled by schools and the State and most nannies that work from home are self-employed.
