A foodbank (also spelled as food bank) is an organization that hands out food to people that can’t afford their own. The first food bank founded in the world was the St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance in Arizona, the USA, in the year 1967. After that, many volunteers joined the cause and by 1976 (only 9 years later), Feeding America was established as an association. Currently they have an extended network of over 200 food banks in the country. There are many food banks that work as sources for other organizations such as food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and orphanages, and they all have in common a desire non-profit for the good of all.

The inventory of food for food banks is provided by manufacturers, distributors or retailers that weren’t able to sell said food. This works as a system of food rescue or food donation.
