Movie Theaters

A movie theater is the building where the general public can view movies or films. Mostly cinemas are focused on the general public and are funded by selling tickets at the entrance in order to be allowed to watch the movie. The first public movie theater in the United States was opened in the city of New York on April 23, 1896 (in the Koster and Bial’s Music Hall located on the 34th Street). However, the first space only dedicated to projecting movies was founded later that year, on July 26, in New Orleans, Louisiana. The movie theater was called Vitascope Hall and was located on Canal Street.

Movies are projected in a projection screen with a movie projector and spectators are seated in the auditorium located in front of the screen. Other terms that refer to movie theaters are cinemas, movie houses, picture theaters and film theaters.
