The African continent is more than three times the size of United StatesAs of 2003, there are fifty four African countries that are members either of the United Nations or the African Union, formerly the Organization of African Unity.

The largest continent on the planet, Asia covers about 30% of the world's land mass and includes forty four countries and assorted islands.	South America is the 4th largest continent in the world and includes over twelve countries and three major territories. It contains the massive Amazon River and surrounding basin which is the largest tropical rain forest on the planet.
